What is Prehab?

Prehab, or preoperative rehabilitation, is a proactive approach to healthcare that involves a series of exercises and techniques designed to prepare your body for a surgical procedure. Unlike traditional rehabilitation, which focuses on recovery post-surgery, prehab aims to strengthen and condition your body before the operation. By doing so, you can potentially reduce complications, speed up recovery, and improve overall outcomes.

Prehab is just as important if not more important than rehab, and during National Physical Therapy Month, we’re going to tell you why that is!

Benefits of Prehab

  • Reduced Postoperative Pain: Strengthening the muscles surrounding the surgical site can help minimize pain and discomfort after the procedure.
  • Faster Recovery: Prehab can improve your body's healing capacity, allowing you to return to your normal activities more quickly.
  • Improved Function: By addressing underlying issues and strengthening relevant muscles, prehab can enhance your overall hip function and quality of life.
  • Reduced Risk of Complications: A well-prepared body is less likely to experience complications during or after surgery.

Common Prehab Exercises

While specific exercises may vary depending on your individual condition, some common prehab activities for hip arthroscopy include:

  • Strengthening Exercises: Hip flexor stretches, glute bridges, clamshells, and side-lying hip abductions can help strengthen the muscles surrounding the hip joint.
  • Range of Motion Exercises: Gentle hip circles, leg swings, and quadricep stretches can improve flexibility and reduce stiffness.
  • Balance Exercises: Activities like single-leg stance and tandem stance can enhance balance and coordination.
  • Core Strengthening: Exercises like planks and bird dogs can strengthen your core muscles, which play a crucial role in hip stability.

Staying Motivated

Staying motivated during prehab can be challenging. Here are some tips to keep you on track:

  • Set Realistic Goals: Break down your prehab journey into smaller, achievable goals to track your progress.
  • Find a Workout Buddy: Having a partner can provide support, accountability, and make the process more enjoyable.
  • Listen to Your Body: Avoid overexertion and take breaks when needed.
  • Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and reward your achievements, no matter how small.

Addressing Common Concerns

Some people may have concerns about starting prehab. Here are some common questions and answers:

  • Is prehab painful? Prehab exercises should not be painful. If you experience discomfort, stop the exercises and consult with your healthcare provider.
  • Can I do prehab at home? Absolutely! Many prehab exercises can be done at home with proper guidance.
  • How long does prehab take? The duration of prehab varies depending on individual circumstances and the specific procedure you are having.

By incorporating prehab into your preparation for hip arthroscopy, you can improve your overall outcomes and experience a smoother recovery.
